Who is Captain Yeti?
Hello, Im Kelly. I published this story in the "Living The Dream" Section of Marijuana Venture Magazine the month we launched Captain Yeti. I'm Proud to share it with you here.
Get ready to read a karma filled comeback story!!
It's long, but I promise you...its worth your time to read.
My husband Roy and I spent 8 years from 2013-2021 building a Washington State cannabis brand named Boggy Boon. We literally built that business from the ground up...
- from pouring the concrete in 100+ degree heat, to running miles of security camera lines around the greenhouses in over a foot of snow
- to the logo, to the branding
- to the 150+ harvests, the 15,000 lbs of weed we grew
- the 200k miles of driving, visiting over 300 stores across Washington
- to the most important responsibility....keeping 25+ people employed so they could support their families.
We put in the the late nights. We sacrificed family time. We gave up so much to build every…single…aspect of that business.
After 8 years of hard work our time with Boggy Boon ended devastatingly. The financial investors thanked us for our sacrifices by meeting with one of our competitors.... behind our back, without our knowledge. They made an agreement, and then without any notice showed up at our farm and changed the locks on us. They immediately fired several key employees, with a plan to fire all of them.
They then proceeded to send letters from their lawyer threatening to contact the WSLCB and Chelan County Sherriff office if he didn’t give them basic things they wanted...like Quickbooks permissions, email logins, and Instagram passwords. Things they should of thought of before they decided to lock us out!!
Just a month before this happened we had won a legal battle to able to stay in business against Chelan County. That fight took us 5 years, and went all the way to the Washington State Supreme Court. We won that fight...but frankly we were not interested in fighting any more legal battles to save that business.
A piece of advice we received was that there are 2 types of people in the industry….
1. the type who use lawyers and sue to get what they want
2. the type who lace up their boots and get to work for it
Let me assure you....We are the type who get to work.
So I got to work. Within 3 months of losing everything I launched a new brand….
Captain Yeti and the Technicolor Renegades!!!
The first thing I did was reach out to a family of 5 that were fired from Boggy Boon while they were all out sick with Covid. That family had carefully trimmed, packaged, and labeled thousands of pounds of weed with us over the years. They worked beside us through some of the hardest times, and helped build the business with us. Luckily, all 5 of the family members moved across the state and joined the Captain Yeti Team!
When we were blindsided we didn’t have any money set aside to be able to build out another grow facility. So our friends who have Indoor farms heard about what happened and offered everything from amazing flower, to dedicated grow space to support us. We are also working closely with our good friend Branden from Inhouse Genetics to make sure that everyone we are working with has the highest quality and most unique genetics in the state.
Instead of quitting when times got tough….We decided to compete. We wanted to let the people decide who they supported.
We decided that we were willing to roll the dice.We were willing to risk it all. Even-though we didn’t have much money, we were betting that our
- 8 years of knowledge
- our friends
- and our hard work
would outshine a bunch of millionaires.
A bunch of millionaires that kicked us out, and changed the locks on us. Unfortunately, they did have a head-start on us....
They had a greenhouse full of weed that we grew, 100k in orders that we sold, and control of another six-figure bank account that we had filled for them.
We risked everything we had and got to work competing. The people made it clear who they supported.... Boggy Boon officially notified retailers that they were closing down as of 5/19/2023. Approximately 16 months after they made a deal with a competitor behind our backs, they are now out of business.
Typically, we aren’t the type to celebrate anyone’s failure, we know most people have to risk so much just for a chance to succeed. But this time we will make an exception. You know what they say…Fuck Around and Find Out.
(this is a great time to point out that when this happened we released a Hash joint strain named in their honor "Fuck Around and Find out" 😊😊)
We are living proof that real value in the industry is with your friends and the community. We are extremely thankful, and we will never forget that along the way. This was all just the beginning. I can’t wait to share with you what’s coming next!
Thanks,
Kelly
